Dog People ... why I love doing animal portraits

I almost never meet my subjects. My work is done from photographs that are sent to me by their moms and dads...dog people! This portrait came from a wonderful dog mom named Maureen.

I met Maureen by chance...I got a phone call out of the blue from a pr guy who worked for a chain of doggy daycares, traveling all over the country promoting them. They were opening a new one and were holding an open house and he thought he'd invite some vendors. He called a local groomer asking for a dog photographer. She instead talked him into calling me. I have no idea who she is, or how she found out about me, but yay!

It wouldn't cost me anything...and I was kinda hesitant, I'd never done anything like that before, all my work comes from the internet or from people who visit my pet portrait site robinzebley.com. But then I asked if my friend, Sharon, who makes handmade soaps, including dog soaps, could come. Sharon is still in the infancy of her soap business...I'll tell you when she gets a website going! (In the meantime, if you're interested in her doggy soap, let me know and I'll put the two of you together!)

Anyway, we had a wonderful day, with lots of dogs, but most fun, lots of dog people. You know animal people are so special. Their hearts are so big....

And Maureen was one of them. She actually was a worker at the daycare...lucky dogs! And these two precious ones are her babies.

When I'm working on a portrait, I "talk" a lot back and forth. I always have questions...exactly what shade is that eye color? And get to feel like my customers are friends, which we are for a short time while we work on the project together! And I miss them when we're done! One of these days I'm goign to make the time to reconnect with all of my wonderful customers...who I think of every time I see my photo of the portrait I created for them! This has nothing to do with dogs, but I thought you would get a kick out of it nonetheless! It has made my day!

this picture made me laugh, in a good way. It is just adorable. You really do capture something special with your dog portraits. I did a blog entry about commissions, arg I can't and won't do them, but I so admire those who can.

all the best this holiday season

Yay, CIAB, I third that!
Andrea, will look. Thanks again for the pie (we at woodcut relief printing class are a gourmet (or is it gourmand?) bunch!
JB, thanks! I do think it takes a certain kind of personality to do commissions. I find it focusses me, I tend to go off on tangents, otherwise!
Celeste, thanks! And thanks to all for visiting my blog. I love seeing you here!!

Great blog, Robin! It's nice and chatty -- just the way I like 'em.

Also, I appreciate a writer who will, unapologetically toss "yay" into their text, as I do. Sometimes, it's the ONLY possible word!
